Woman hit with pole in burglary

A burglar attacked a woman with a metal pole before stealing her purse in a house in Ashington.

At just after 2.40pm on Saturday, August 2, police received a report a man had pushed his way past the elderly occupant of an address on Park Road East to gain entry to it.

He attacked the woman with a metal pole before stealing her purse and making off.

The woman has been taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment to a head wound.

The offender is described as of large build and wearing old clothing and a hat. He had his face covered.

Ashington Neighbourhood Inspector Dave Harris said: “This incident will no doubt cause concern among the community.

“However, this is an unusual crime for the Ashington area and we have officers on patrol to offer reassurance to residents. I’d urge anyone with concerns to speak to them.

“I’d also urge anyone who may have any information on this incident to contact us, including anyone who may have seen this man in the street around the time of the incident or leaving it after.

“No matter how insignificant you think the information is, it could assist with our ongoing enquiries.”
