FUNDRAISERS across South East Northumberland have helped raise thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Among those raising money as part the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning last Friday were staff and students of The Blyth School Community College.

And the event, held in the Chase Farm Drive college’s open learning centre smashed last year’s total, collecting £800 in donations.

Members of the local community also supported the event, many of whom also brought along pies, scones and cakes.

Sixth form volunteers Jordan Felgate, Paige Chandler and head boy Joe Young were on hand to serve refreshments.

Punters at the Keel Row Pub in Seaton Delaval contributed more than £3,300 after management held practically a month of fundraising events.

A raffle, tombola and cake sales were all held in the build up to Friday’s big event, where the whole bar and restaurant were taken over by fundraisers.

The pub arranged for elderly people from local churches and homes so they could join in on the day by picking them up in a mini bus and driving them to the pub.

Manager Sharon Herron said: “It was a fantastic day everyone was amazing, we thought it would just be in the bar, but the whole restaurant was full.

”One of our regular customers Peter Arnold was diagnosed with terminal cancer seven years ago but he is still here and he is our inspiration.”

In a further gesture of kindness the band booked in for their gig on Friday night, The Klassix, donated their fee for the night to the fundraising efforts of the pub.
