Youngster's design on side of fire engine
A CRAMLINGTON youngster has won a poster competition that will now see her design on the side of a fire engine.
Seven-year-old Abby Russell was congratulated by firefighters from Cramlington's Red Watch at Burnside First School on Friday.
Her artowrk will now feature on the side of one of their vehicles for the next six months.
The competition, which sprang from a visit by Red Watch to Burnside First School in May, ran to encourage pupils to think about the fire safety messages they had learned.
Abby's drawing was chosen as it incorporated important emergency contact details and a warning to hoax callers.
Northumberland County Council's executive member for community safety, Coun Ian Lindley, said: "This a great way to help children understand fire safety messages – Abby's poster will appeal to all ages; displayed on the side of a fire engine it's an eye-catching way of drawing attention to our emergency numbers and our campaign against hoax calls."
Chief fire officer Brian Hesler added: "Meeting young people to inform them about what the fire service does is a crucial part of our work.
"Abby's poster will feature on the side of one of the Cramlington-based appliances until November this year.
"We are pleased that pupils at Burnside School enjoyed the talk and competition organised by Cramlington Fire Station's Red Watch officers."
