Youngsters can quiz the politicians

AN EVENT is being held to promote political debate and discussion among young people in the county.

The session is aimed at giving young people the chance to ask questions of political representatives and discuss issues important to them, and follows on from a number of other successful workshops where young people discussed what were the most important issues faced by them and their peers in the county.

The three major parties were all invited to send speakers as was the Green Party, and confirmed speakers include Northumberland MPs and Morpeth town councillor Nic Best.

Attendees will have the opportunity to quiz local political representatives and prioritise issues discussed at previous workshops according to their relevance to young people using an e-voting system.

Paddy Gascoigne, service manager of democratic services at Northumberland County Council, said: “With local elections coming up on May 2, it’s important to raise awareness of democracy with people of all ages.

“This is a great opportunity for young people in our county to get their voices heard and learn more about what their political representatives do.”

The event will take place on Friday, March 15, at the St James Community Centre, Morpeth, from 5.30pm and last until around 8.15pm.

To submit questions or to reserve a place, contact democratic services at demserv.ar@northumberland.gov.uk or (01670) 622 616.
