YOUNG people from Northumberland have been learning about living by themselves.

Thanks to a national pilot project, sixth formers from four schools descended on outdoor adventure centre Whithaugh Park in the Scottish Borders, for a five-day residential stay aimed at encouraging leadership skills and promoting independent living.

The young people from St Benet Biscop High School in Bedlington, The Blyth School Community College, Bedlingtonshire Community High School and The King Edward VI School in Morpeth, took part in the week, organised and delivered under Northumberland’s Catch22 National Citizens Service (NCS) partnership of Positive Futures Northumberland and Leading Link.

It included outward bound activities and challenges designed to help learn vital living skills and give an experience of time away from home.

Each group had their own chalet and kitchen and were given the responsibility of budgeting, shopping, cooking and cleaning up after themselves.

Leading Link manager, Lyn Horton, said: “This project was a great opportunity for these sixth formers to start thinking about living by themselves, in a fun and interactive way.

“It was fantastic to see those who were living on super noodles and toast at the start of the week were cooking chicken curries and banoffee pie by the end of it.

“I think that is testament not only to the NCS programme, but to the hard work of the young people involved as well.”

Participants will now be involved in their own community social action projects.

Working in the community garden at The Lodge in Bedlington, they will develop eco-friendly and interactive structures and create a small raised bed area for a variety of fruit and vegetables.
