HOCKEY players from Blyth are about to be tested at national level when they join together on a sporting tour.

The best Year 10 players from Emmanuel College in Gateshead, and Bede Academy, in Blyth, have been selected for the Emmanuel Schools Foundation Pumas squad.

The team will spend four days in the Warwickshire area playing matches against some of the best girls’ schools in the country.

Amber Witson, 14, from Blyth, said: “Six of us who play in the Bede under-16 squad were selected for the Puma trials, which were held at The King’s Academy in Middlesbrough.

“We’re really pleased because all six of us were selected for the final squad.”

Megan Easton, 14, from Blyth, added: “We’re not sure what positions we’ll be playing yet because there are three defenders from Bede and more from Emmanuel College and the other ESF school, Trinity Academy, but we’ll find out when the tour starts.”

The squad’s pre-tour training was scuppered by the snow, but they will have a chance to train together before each match.

During the tour, the students will also have a chance to visit Shakespeare’s birthplace and the Globe theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.
