Youngsters are a class act
BRILLIANT performances by individuals from musicians to mathematicians have made St Benet Biscop RC High at Bedlington a class act in the GCSEs.
Year 11 students are celebrating the best GCSE results the school has ever achieved, 81 per cent clinching A*-C grades.
For those gaining maths and English in the high-grade five, the figure was 60 per cent, another record for the school.
Delighted headteacher Nick Bowen said: "Every year we seem to do even better than the year before and this year breaks all records.
"I would once again like to congratulate the maths and English departments for their efforts this year, enabling the students to do so well."
Alison Humphreys, of Haydon in Bedlington, picked up straight A grades, 11 of them A*.
She said: "It was a lot of hard work – it's paid off, though. I have always enjoyed school, so I enjoy school work and like to do well. I don't think I'm competitive, I just don't like to do less than my best.
"At school they encourage people to do the best they can do – it's a very supportive atmosphere. They hold revision clubs after school and lunchtime, and help with whatever is needed."
The maths department saw 36 A and A* grades and English literature also did extremely well.
Benet Biscop specialises in business, Mr Bowen holding a Queen's Award for his work in this field, and this year's results were outstanding.
Some 87 per cent of those sitting the exam passing at A*-C. Forty-four
people took A or A*.
In music 84 per cent gained A*-C, scientists did well and more than 25 per cent earned A or A* in religious education.
