Youngsters brought to book

young bookworms from two south east Northumberland high school helped decide the winner of this year’s North East Teenage Book Award.

Children at Seaton Delaval’s Astley High School and Blyth School Community College had to read six new works of teenage fiction before giving their opinions on which one should win the prize.

All ten young judges were given book vouchers and invited along to the award ceremony, held at Newcastle’s Centre for Life.

This year’s winner was Leicester-born Bali Rai for his novel Killing Honour, a thriller about so-called honour murders.

Phil Earle was highly commended for his debut novel, Being Billy.

Phil, originally from Hull but now living in London, also paid a visit to the Blyth school ahead of the ceremony to give a talk about his book, the story of a boy’s experiences in a care home.
