A memorial football match has raised more than £3,000 for Wansbeck palliative care.

Neil and Helen Dickinson, along with their family and friends, held the charity football match named The Match for Margaret in memory of their late mother Margaret Stewart.

The football match, Bedlington Terriers versus Koast Radio, and a junior match between Ashington and Bedlington under 10s made the day a sell-out event, raising funds for the hospital’s palliative care unit as it provided care and support to Margaret after she was diagnosed with bladder and secondary cancer.

Margaret was a nurse herself, caring for elderly patients for many years and also training young nurses.

Sadly Margaret passed away last year. However the family, keen for her memory to live on, wanted to follow her determination to help others and make a difference to their lives.

Neil said: “We are really proud to have fundraised in her memory and made a contribution to the palliative care unit.

“This has been a great way of ensuring that her caring nature lives on to help other patients in need.

“We are already planning the next event for May 2016 and hope it will be another great success.”

Ward sister Leanne Hale said: “We are incredibly grateful to Neil, Helen and their family and friends for raising funds to support our unit.

“This donation will make a difference to our patients and ensure that Margaret’s memory is never forgotten.”
