Memories of the days when coal was ‘King’ have been revived for residents of an Ashington care home, with the unveiling of a genuine pit wheel in its grounds.

The old wheel salvaged from Ellington Colliery was officially unveiled by Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery at the Woodhorn Park care home.

General manager, Joanne Young, said: “It is not just a special occasion for our residents but for our community as well and will stand as a reminder of just how proud former miners and their families are of what the mining industry meant to this area.”

Mr Lavery added: “Former miners are and have been residents at the home, and I am sure they will be pleased to see this link established with the industry.”
