HUNDREDS of people turned out to see the new cycling and walking network between Blyth and Bedlington officially opened.

More than 350 people watched James Turner, regional head of the Big Lottery Fund, cut a ribbon at Gallagher Park in Bedlington to declare the network open.

The new network, funded by a lottery grant, has been developed by transport charity Sustrans and Northumberland County Council.

Sustrans regional director Bryn Dowson said: “The new routes are a fantastic way to get around Blyth and Bedlington whether it’s for commuting or leisure.

“Walking and cycling are by far the best ways to make short journeys, helping us all save money, keeping us fit and healthy and doing something good for the environment.”

Mr Turner added: “It’s great to see lottery funding being used to help us to travel by foot and by bike safely and more easily.”
