Ex-miner and fanatical gardener Bill Rutherford from Hedgerow Mews at Ashington has grown a tomato plant which features a record 29 tomatoes on one truss.

And the 82-year-old ex-miner was left stunned when one truss on his goldstar tomato plant produced 29 tomatoes – when the average is only ten.

Bill, who has appeared on numerous gardening shows on radio and TV, said: “I was very surprised when it produced this many.

“I’ve now got it on display in my greenhouse, I had to cut it off the plant as I was concerned that the weight of all these tomatoes would break the truss.”

Bill added that he uses his own compost on his other vegetables and plants that he grows.
