HUNDREDS of people turned out across south east Northumberland on Sunday and Monday nights to catch a glimpse of the northern lights – and they were not left disappointed.

On Sunday night, the aurora borealis, caused by unusual solar activity and most often seen further north in countries such as Norway and Lapland, was visible across the UK.

Sky-watchers and photographers were out in force at towns and villages including Morpeth, Newbiggin and Cresswell and were rewarded with spectacular displays turning the night sky green.

Photographer Nicholas Gray captured the Northern Lights at Church Point in Newbiggin, and Lee Jennings photographed them in Cresswell.
