Organisations have been practising the skills needed to deal with oil spills.

Northumberland County Council joined the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Environmental Agency and Natural England for an oil pollution response training course.

The beach supervisors’ two day course started at the fire and rescue headquarters near Cramlington and culminated with a practical exercise at Amble.

Ian Clough, civil contingencies manager at the council, said: “Northumberland has a beautiful and unique coastline landscape containing a large number of sites of special scientific interest and historic sites and we will make sure we are in the best position to protect it from all potential disaster situations.”
