A young bookworm proved himself a prize guy by ending up as one of three winners of a festive competition run by Northumberland County Council’s library service.

Oliver Ince, seven, was one of three youngsters county-wide to win £25 Amazon book vouchers.

He was presented with his prize at Ashington Library by Bedlington East councillor Val Tyler and Jenny Kinnear, the council’s senior librarian for children and young people.

Competition sponsor Britannica Library donated the prizes and arranged the quiz with the authority’s librarian for learning and skills, Shirley Cross.

Oliver and the other two winners were drawn from correct entries of 12 Christmas-themed questions.

The festive questions were compiled using the Britannica Library, Northumberland’s online version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica available to customers in libraries or via the internet at home.

Coun Tyler, the council’s cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture, said: “The Britannica Library is a great resource for homework and study and one of a number of online resources available from Northumberland libraries.

“The competition has been lots of fun and an excellent way of introducing Northumberland library services and online resources to younger residents and visitors.”

Children were invited to test their general knowledge and research skills in the online winter quiz in November and December.
