CHILDREN took on the roles of captains during a pirate themed play day at a shopping centre.

As part of the summer community events programme at Cramlington’s Manor Walks shopping centre, the youngsters took to their ‘ships’.

Savannah Don, seven, from Mayfield, and five-year-old Tom Scott, from Newland Drive, were winners of the fancy dress competition, both taking home a goodie bag of prizes donated by centre shops.

Manor Walks centre general manager Bruno Coppola said: “Despite the gloomy weather the pirate play day event went down a storm.

“It was better than anticipated, attracting hundreds of visitors who all enjoyed the day’s activities and one family even travelled from as far as Hartlepool to be with us.”

Savannah, who attends Hareside Primary School, said: “I had a really good family day out and was very excited to win the fancy dress competition.

“I hope I can come to more parties like this.”

The pirate play day was run in conjunction with Concordia Leisure Centre and Blyth Valley Arts.

It included fairground rides, a treasure hunt, a bungee trampoline, face painting and the Sure Start play bus.
