The ball was in the court of squash players when it came to sprucing up their facilities.

Volunteers from Concordia Squash Club gave up two of their Sunday mornings to clean the walls of their three courts at the Cramlington leisure centre.

The initiative coincided with a wider refurbishment programme, including replacing the heating system and re-sanding the floors.

Club treasurer Ian McAllister said: “It has been a frustrating season, with much work and disruption going on throughout the centre, but there is now light at the end of the tunnel.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to complete our cleaning operation as we were not allowed access to the upper wall areas due to health and safety concerns.

“Hopefully, the centre’s ‘ladder-trained’ staff will complete the task and we can look forward to a bright winter season in September.”

The club has more than 60 players, with three men’s and a ladies’ team, as well as a junior section. Coaching is available and new players of all standards are welcome.
