Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery in Blyth.

It happened just before 9.30am this morning, when a man approached a woman walking along Plessey Road and tried to steal her bag.

The woman held onto it and they both fell to the ground before the man ran off empty-handed towards Robert Street, leaving her shaken but otherwise unhurt.

The man is described as a white, 5 feet 10" to 5 feet 11" tall, of skinny build, wearing a black hoody with a black scarf around his face, black tracksuit bottoms.

Extra officers are in the area carrying out inquiries and to give reassurance to local residents.
