Police put on extra patrols to foil thefts

POLICE patrols have been stepped up in Ashington following a spate of burglaries and metal thefts.

Officers from the Northumbria force’s mounted section have been supporting the town’s neighbourhood policing team as they carry out extra patrols.

Officers believe their increased presence on the town’s streets is paying off as four theft suspects were arrested in one night last week.

A 21-year-old man suspected of stealing lead from the roof of a house in Castle Terrace was arrested a week ago on Tuesday.

Later that same night, officers arrested three men in Ariel Street on suspicion of burglary.

Inspector Jackie Coleman, of Ashington’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “I hope these arrests send a message to criminals thinking of targeting Ashington that there are officers in the area on the lookout for burglars and thieves, and that if we catch you committing crimes, you face being arrested.

“The high-profile policing presence in the area will continue, but we need the public to play their part.

“A lot of the homes being burgled are the ones with doors left unlocked overnight.

“Lock your doors and windows when you go to bed or when leaving the house and report any suspicious people or behaviour to police.”
