STUDENTS were given a taste of the political limelight at their school’s answer to BBC1’s Question Time.

The Lodge at Bedlington’s St Benet Biscop Catholic High School last week hosted a debate featuring two of the county’s MPs and other decision-makers in front of an invited audience.

Battling it out to get points across were Berwick MP Alan Beith, Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery, Cramlington county councillor Wayne Daley, Northumberland County Council leader Jeff Reid and members of the school’s sixth-form debating club.

BBC Look North presenter Colin Briggs was in the chair for a discussion ranging over subjects such as regeneration and education.

The debate was part of the school’s involvement in the BBC’s School Report 2012, a project intended to interest children aged 11 to 16 in the news.

Reports by pupils, including one on last week’s debate, can be seen at www.st-benetbiscop.org.uk
