Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery has dismissed reports that he is to stand for the Labour Party leadership.

Mr Lavery was re-elected for the constituency last week with a 10,881 majority, taking 50 per cent of the total votes cast.

Reports this morning suggested the MP was considering running for leadership of his Party after Ed Miliband stepped down.

But Mr Lavery has said he is backing Andy Burnham for the job.

A spokesman for Mr Lavery said: “Ian is definitely not going for the leadership.

“He is supporting Andy Burnham. He never said that he was going to go for it. It was other people pushing his name forward. He is not going to be standing for the leadership.”

Mr Lavery confirmed his stance on social media site Twitter.

He has tweeted: “Thanks to everyone for their kind words and support. I am fully behind @andyburnhammp and his leadership campaign.”
