A host of new stand-up shows have been announced for a new comedy club founded by two Blyth brothers.

Punch-Drunk Comedy Club returns to Newsham Side Club on Monday, March 16, with a headline appearance from top Geordie stand-up Jason Cook, from BBC Two sitcom Hebburn, which has already sold out.

The line-up, hosted by hometown hero Kai Humphries, also includes character comic Jellybean Martinez and Punch-Drunk favourite Danny McLoughlin.

Building up to the summer, the club will be welcoming a mix of TV stars and established circuit acts, including former Scottish Comedian of the Year Mark Nelson, and Live At The Apollo star Tom Stade.

And the 2014 Comedian’s Comedian award-winner Gavin Webster will make an appearance on May 18.

Founded by Gavin Humphries and his brother, stand-up comic Kai, Punch-Drunk is a community-driven venture that aims to bring the world’s best stand-up talent to Northumberland.

We’re planning on developing our flagship Blyth event into something of a carnival

Gavin Humphries

Gavin said: “We’re planning on developing our flagship Blyth event into something of a carnival, starting with the release of our early 2015 programme.

“The comedy purists would likely be aghast with our plans, but there are plenty of clubs providing stripped down gigs set against brick-walls.

“We already have the carnival atmosphere and we’re going to oblige by bringing the carnival to town.”

The programme is now being taken to other towns.

And as part of Punch-Drunk’s community drive, the comedy club has teamed up with local charity Princess Ellie’s Trust.

Punch-Drunk donate 30 tickets for each show, from which the charity, run by Rachel and Dan Long, keeps 100 per cent of the takings for the cause.

Rachel said: “Whilst they are working their socks off to assure that they provide the best night for their fabulous community, they are also raising money for Princess Ellie’s Trust.

“On the first show we raised £486.19 and the next we raised £417.64 totalling £903.83. It’s amazing.”
