A headteacher is retiring after almost two decades at a Seaton Delaval school.

Pamela Watts has been at the helm of Whytrig Middle School in Western Avenue for nearly 18 years.

Although it was a sad day for Pamela, an ardent Newcastle United fan, she was delighted to receive a shirt signed by the team’s manager Alan Pardew, wishing her the best for the future.

The shirt was presented to her by Year 8 pupil Tom Allan, who is currently on Newcastle United’s Academy Scholarship.

Pamela wore the shirt while staff and children united in assembly to sing her a personalised version of the Blaydon Races.

Pamela said: “I have really loved every minute as headteacher of Whytrig Middle School and will miss everyone a lot.

“I wish pupils and staff all the very best.”
