Children at Burnside Primary School in Cramlington had an amazing start to the week when the ‘Lions of Zululand’ came in to school.
The group of dedicated young people from Kwazulu, Natal, in South Africa demonstrated traditional Zulu songs and dance, beginning with an explosive performance for the whole school before working with the children within their year groups in cultural workshops such as African singing, artwork, storytelling and performance.
Mrs Akram, who co-ordinated the event, said: “This gave the children a real feel for and insight into African culture, instead of information from text books.
“We are always looking to give the children first hand experiences.
One youngster who watched the performances said the dancers were brilliant and especially when they made all the teachers join in for the finale as there was lots of cheering.
