Students were given a date with potential employers and careers.

Year 11 pupils at Bedlingtonshire High School took part in a careers speed dating event where they were able to talk to 12 different companies.

Among the businesses in attendance were Sainsbury’s, Barclays, Northumberland County Council, G4S, Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service and the armed forces.

Students practiced their communication skills to the best effect as there was a time limit on how long they had to speak to the employers.

Head of sixth form Mike Laidlaw said: “A lot of our young people struggle when it comes to interviews as they don’t have the confidence to speak to adults.

“The aim was to help prepare students for the world of work by developing their confidence, communication skills and allowing them to understand what makes a good interview.”

“The Career Speed Dating Event helps students to better understand progression pathways, the qualifications needed for various careers and the skills employers are looking for.”
