Pupils from south east Northumberland have been taking part in a community tree planting initiative.

Four students from each of Meadowdale Academy, St Bede’s RC Primary, Bedlington West End First School and Whitley Memorial C of E First School, met with Gareth Stevens, from Northumberland County Council, and Merle Rewcastle and Brian Thompson, from Bedlington in Bloom, to take part in a community tree planting initiative in Schalksmuhle Road, Bedlington.

The event was organised by Bedlington in Bloom as part of its outreach to schools, which is seen as a vital part of the organisation’s programme to increase community involvement in its activities.

Mr Stevens, from the council’s recreation department, said: “We value young people getting involved in the care of their environment from an early age, as then they are more likely to look after it when they are older.”
