PETROL forecourts in South East Northumberland were packed with motorists today stocking up on fuel as threat of a national strike beckoned.

Some garages warned drivers they could only fill their tanks up to a certain level, while other garages had stewards on to control the flow of traffic.

Cars lined up at the petrol station at Asda in Blyth where 23-year-old Nick Percy was waiting to buy some fuel.

He said: “ I really do need to get petrol, I’m driving over to Hexham for work and need it for that.

“I’m quite surprised to see how many people are here I thought I’d be able to get straight in.

“As long as I get my petrol I’m not bothered if they strike.”

Also waiting in traffic was Mr and Mrs Atkinson of Blyth who said: “It’s the Government who have caused this chaos.”
