HUNDREDS of disabled Remploy workers in the north east have gone on strike over plans to close their factories.

It is expected that 27 loss-making Remploy factories across the UK will be closed, including the site in Ashington, as part of Government plans to use the £320million currently allocated to disabled employment services elsewhere.

It means that over 1000 disabled workers could be out of work, with many having worked there for over 10 years.

The workers took part in picket protests at their Remploy factories on Thursday morning as part of their plans to raise awareness of the issues they face in the months ahead, with many redundancies expected.
