A transport company picked two familiar faces to help it launch a new bus service in south east Northumberland as part of a multi-million pound investment in the county.
Arriva North East has launched the Sapphire Service X21/X22 between Newbiggin, Ashington and Newcastle, via Stakeford, Wansbeck Estate, Guide Post and Bedlington.
The buses were officially unveiled at the Newbiggin Maritime Centre by royal lookalikes the Queen and Prince Charles, giving guests and passers-by a ‘right royal welcome’.
The Sapphire buses are a new concept from Arriva, providing an investment of more than £1.6m, which is part of a bigger £6m investment for the whole of Northumberland.
All vehicles are equipped with power points to charge phones and lap-tops, free WiFi, audio visual stop annunciation and extra-comfy e-leather seating for customers.
Employees at the launch event highlighted additional benefits the buses offer.
Nick Knox, area managing director for Arriva North East, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing the Sapphire brand to the area; we’re so excited to be announcing this investment.
“The bus service will offer our customers a new and improved experience, we’re confident that they will be delighted with the enhancements and we hope to encourage more people to join us on board. They really do add a bit of sparkle to people’s every day journey.”
