Santa will be coming to the streets of Ashington this year in his new specially designed sleigh.
In the past, 1st Ashington Scout group assisted the Ashington Lions Club with their Christmas fund raising by accompanying them around the street of the town with Santa’s sleigh.
But with the demise of the Ashington Lions Club, they decided to send their sleigh to their branch in Alnwick ending a tradition in Ashington that has gone back years.
Scout leader Mark Johnson said his group then stepped in to help.
“As a group we decided that we couldn’t let the tradition of the sleigh go and disappoint so many children in the town so we created a brand new sleigh,” he said.
The sleigh – which was started last year – will be lit up like a Christmas tree and will be blasting out festive songs when it is towed around the streets of the west end of the town on December 9, 11, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 21.
Santa Clause will be out every night to meet the children and hand out sweeties whilst members of the group , in full uniform, will be collecting door to door raising funds for the group. We also raise funds for the children’s ward at Wansbeck hospital.
The sleigh will be also be outside ASDA from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, December 21.
