The Bishop of Newcastle will say goodbye in a special service to mark his retirement.
The Right Reverend Martin Wharton and his wife Marlene will say a final goodbye to the Diocese of Newcastle during a Service of Thanksgiving for the Gracious Love of God on Sunday, September 21, at 4pm in St Nicholas’ Cathedral, Newcastle.
He retires as 11th Bishop of Newcastle, a post he has held since 1997 when he succeeded the Right Reverend Alec Graham in February 1998.
In 1992 he was appointed as the Area Bishop of Kingston in the Diocese of Southwark, South London, and has served in the House of Lords since 2003.
He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to the Church of England and to the community in the north east.
Bishop Martin has been married to Marlene since 1970 and they have one daughter, two sons and four grandsons.
