June 24 to 30 is Seafarers Awareness Week and I am pleased to be calling for seafarers and the essential work they do to be more widely acknowledged.
As an island nation we depend on them 365 days a year.
They handle 95 per cent of our imports, deliver fuel for our power stations, protect our shipping and provide food for our tables.
But many seafarers have very hard lives.
Merchant crew can be away from home for months.
And closer to home our sea fishermen have the most hazardous job in the UK.
To find out more and how you can help those in need – please visit www.seafarersawarenessweek.org or phone Seafarers UK on 020 7932 0000.
