VOLUNTEERS at Ashington’s Wansbeck General Hospital were bowled over when England cricketer Steve Harmison dropped in to open its new-look café and shop.
The Ashington-born sportsman officially opened the volunteer-run facilities on Monday.
Steve, 32, said: “I am pleased to officially open the shop at my local hospital.
“I know from experience that the shop is of great benefit to patients, people visiting friends or relatives in hospital and those who work there.
“It is great news that it has been extended and now sells a greater range of products.
“I would like to thank all the volunteers who work in the shop. They do a fantastic job, are always cheerful and go out of their way to help.”
At the opening, Steve met shop volunteers Betty Scott and Doreen Craigs, both from Ashington.
Betty, a volunteer at the hospital for 18 years, said: “I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s a joy and a privilege to work there. The new shop is fantastic.”
