Still time to enter the Pride awards

NOMINATIONS have been coming in for over more than a month for the Pride of Northumberland Awards – and readers now have a little more time to get those entries in.

To make sure none of the county’s unsung heroes go unrecognised, we have decided to extend the nomination period.

The closing date for entries is now this Saturday – August 25.

The awards honour those who make our county a better place to live – and especially those whose tireless work behind the scenes often goes unnoticed.

One of those people is David Taylor of Ponteland, nominated in the Fundraiser of the Year category, who has collected more than £20,000 for charity in a fundraising career spanning 20 years.

David, a chef at St Oswald’s Hospice in Gosforth, also carried the Olympic Torch through Morpeth in June.

Since then, he has raised £6,000 by arranging Games-themed events at the town’s Northgate Hospital and local schools.

His mum Brenda Johnson said that David is just as dedicated to his work at the hospice as he is to his charity activities.

“He never brags about anything,” she said.

“He’s the pride of Northumberland as far as I’m concerned.”

The other categories are: Community Champion, Child of Courage, Safer Community, Role Model, Green Champion, Student of the Year, Sporting Achievement, Community Group and Sporting Achievement.

Our sponsors this year are Northumberland County Council, Banks Group, NBSL, Northumbrian Water and Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure.

The winners will be revealed in a ceremony at the Alnwick Garden’s Pavilion on September 13.

The Pride of Northumberland Awards are organised by Northeast Press, which publishes the News Post Leader as well as our sister papers the Morpeth Herald and Northumberland Gazette, alongside Berwick Advertiser publisher Tweeddale Press.
