Hair and beauty students from Northumberland College achieved amazing success at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists national finals.

Its contingent of young adults came away with two golds, five silvers and a bronze award.

The competition for trainee hairdressers was held at the Blackpool Winter Gardens.

Northumberland dominated the top of the leaderboard in the advanced skills challenge, with Thomas Scott – an apprentice at Zuenziga in Bedlington – winning gold and Ashleigh Senior securing a second place silver.

Molly Ringrose from Cramlington, who is a first year apprentice at House of Marley, secured a big win as she obtained full marks from all the judges to win gold in the first year blow dry competition.

The 17-year-old said: “Winning a gold medal was an amazing achievement that has given me a lot of confidence.”

In other categories, Cheryl Keeney and Kirsty Baldwin achieved silver awards.

Further success came from the college’s media makeup students, who were competing for the very first time in this contest.

Jessica Eke secured a silver, Patrycja Nowacka also won a silver and there was a bronze award for Bethaney Roughhead.

Northumberland College’s academy head for hair and beauty, Dawn Eastham, said: “I’m so proud of all our students for getting this far and to achieve what they have is an unbelievable achievement as well as being a testament to the time, effort and skills all the staff have shared with them.”
