Superstore will bring new jobs to town

PROGRESS has been made on the building work of a new supermarket in Blyth, that will bring temporary new jobs to the town.

Work on the development of a new Morrisons foodstore in Blyth town centre has reached another milestone with phase one complete, making the building wind and watertight.

Contractors McLaren Construction have now commenced phase two of the building work, fitting out the store for an opening in early 2013.

Most of the overall building work is now complete, and the shell construction has provided construction work opportunities.

The emphasis is now moving to the interior fit-out, which will see jobs on site peaking at around 100, with 80 per cent of these for skilled craftsmen including electricians, joiners and plumbers – all working towards completing the construction process and helping to turn the new store into reality.

Morrisons development executive, Richard Bakes, said: “We’ve made really good progress on the construction of our new store in Blyth.

“Around 100 construction jobs have been created during the building process with a further 100 permanent position now on offer at the new store.

“Once open, the flagship Morrisons store will provide greater choice and additional parking for Blyth town centre, providing a long awaited and much needed boost to the town.”

The next milestone will be to connect the power supply, with all the interior fixtures and fittings in place by early December 2012, ready for the 2013 opening.

Once completed, the new foodstore will play a key part in regenerating Blyth town centre, providing greater consumer choice and additional car parking for the local community.

The existing store will continue to trade until the new store opens, when the existing store building will be demolished, making way for additional car parking to be created on site.

Staff at the existing store will transfer to the new store and up to 100 additional local job opportunities will be created in the larger new store.

The recruitment process for these additional vacancies is progressing following a very well-attended local recruitment day at the beginning of October and interviews are currently taking place.

Morrisons has a successful track record in providing local job opportunities. A joint partnership with Northumberland County Council and local Jobcentre Plus is concentrating recruitment activity in the local area, ensuring that the job opportunities are aimed squarely at local people.
