An American football team from the county has been cooking up a storm in a county brewery.

Northumberland Lightning American Football head coach Mal Ditcham, team captain Jack Johnson and running back Gary Cooper visited Ashington-based microbrewery Acton Ales to brew their own ale.

After completing their first season in the National Leagues representing Northumberland, the players approached Acton Ales to create their own beer.

Acton Ales owner Paul Johnson, gave the players a tour of the microbrewery, and then helped them to create ‘Northumberland Lightning Ale’.

He said: “Making the beer helps support a local team, because as a local business it’s important to help out the local community, as both real ale and American Football have lots of followers.”

Head coach Mal Ditcham added: “It was a great opportunity to combine two of our hobbies and also help support a local business.

“Paul and Dave were excellent hosts and it was brilliant to see the hard work that goes into brewing.”
