A teenager is a step closer to spending her gap year teaching English in South Africa after she raised more than £300 in a sponsored swim.

Rebecca Wright, of Cowpen Road in Blyth, will spend 12 months on a placement with Project Trust, where she will work in a children’s home in either Mthatha or Johannesberg.

Over the last six months, Rebecca has been holding a number of fundraising events, including raffles and bake sales, to raise £5,400 by June in order to take part in the programme.

The 17-year-old is now well on her way to reaching her target and recently she raised a further £311 after swimming the length of the English Channel, which is 21 miles, at Blyth Sports Centre.

This brings her fundraising total so far to £3,386.68.

Rebecca, a student at Bedlington’s St Benet Biscop High School, said: “I feel quite excited and relieved at the thought of only needing to raise the £2,000.

“The swim has been my biggest fundraiser to date and it was quite a challenge, but one that was faced with enthusiasm by myself and everyone who sponsored me.”

Rebecca will be raising more funds by raffling off two footballs signed by Newcastle United Football Club for 50p a ticket.

Winners will be drawn on Friday, May 31.
