Triathlon champion Ryan Shiel has proved he’s a good sport by going back to his old school to help out in games lessons and encourage pupils to fulfil their potential.

Ryan Shiel is doing work experience at Bedlingtonshire Community High School as part of his studies for a sport science and coaching degree he is taking at Northumbria University in Newcastle.

The 19-year-old, the north east’s grand prix triathlon racing champion for 2014, works with PE department staff and students every Wednesday.

Rachel Shaw, head of PE at the Bedlington school, said: “The staff and students look forward to his visits every week.

“Bedlingtonshire High is really appreciative that Ryan has taken the opportunity to work with us in this capacity.”

“Ryan has travelled across the globe with his triathlon racing so he has a wealth of knowledge and experience to offer to the students and they really enjoy his support in lessons.

“Every school is pleased to see ex-students doing well in their chosen careers, and it’s even better when they come back and work with you in a professional capacity.”
