To the Editor
I’d like to thank everyone who visited a National Gardens Scheme garden last year and helped to raise a tremendous £26,000 from the garden open days in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.
This year, once again, we have many delightful, mostly private, gardens to visit. They are listed in our booklet, showing all the gardens open in the North East and Cumbria, which is available in tourist information centres and many garden centres and details are at www.ngs.org.uk Last weekend we started the season with Bide-a-wee Cottage at Stanton and we end the season in September, with the spectacular dahlia fields at Halls of Heddon.
Not many people realise that the NGS is the principal donor in the history of both Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie Cancer Care. This year the NGS has given £2.6 million to these and other charities.
Visiting a beautiful garden, tucking into tea and cake, and buying plants, is a great way of helping those in need.
We, and our beneficiaries, appreciate the support we receive from visitors to our gardens.
