POLICE have increased their patrols in Ashington following a rise in metal thefts.
Officers have stepped up high profile presence in an attempt to crackdown on the growing problem.
The new measures have already resulted in one arrest.
A 20-year-old man has was arrested and charged in connection with the theft of metal and going equipped to steal.
Acting Inspector Nigel Howitt said: “Over recent days Ashington has experienced an increase in thefts of copper cable and metal gas pipes.
“Those responsible for committing these crimes are not only risking their lives but also those living in the premises they target.
“We have increased patrols and as a result an arrest has been made.
“I would urge people to be vigilant and contact police if they see anything suspicious or have any information about these crimes.”
