Top student is awarded

An apprentice from south east Northumebrland has picked up the student of the year award from a county college.

Drew Barber, who works at Banks Mining’s Shotton surface mine near Cramlington, picked up Northumberland College’s top accolade, for his dedication and commitment to his apprenticehship.

Drew, 22, from Newbiggin, joined Banks Mining in 2012 on a three-year apprenticeship and has since trained as a mechanic on the company’s wide-ranging plant fleet, which encompasses everything from Land Rovers to Caterpillar 789 off-highway dump trucks with a capacity of 180 tonnes.

“It’s been a really enjoyable last three years, and winning this award is great,” he said.
