A young heart transplant girl from Cramlington has just returned home from the British Transplant Games with two bronze medals.

Nine-year-old Rachel Hooley underwent a heart transplant at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle due to dilated cardiomyopathy in February 2012.

Rachel represented the Kids Freeman Heart and Lung Team at the British Transplant Games, competing in the swimming and badminton events, picking up a bronze medal in the 25m breaststroke and a bronze in the badminton.

The youngster was given the medal by two members of the Donor Family Network and transplant coordinator at the Freeman, Lynn Holt.

Rachel’s mum Eve said: “Rachel’s life has been turned upside down since undergoing her transplant in 2012 but she never moans or complains she just embraces life.

“She makes us so proud every day.”

Rachel is now looking forward to next years British Transplant Games in Bolton 2014 and is hoping more children from the Freeman will join the team and come along and have fun.
