Kayaker rescued after capsizing

A CANOEIST had to be pulled out of the North Sea after his kayak capsized off the Port of Blyth on Saturday.

An RNLI lifeboat was called out, but by the time it reached the scene of the mishap off the East Pier at 1.54pm, the canoeist had already been rescued by a passing yacht.

He was then handed over to the lifeboat to be taken ashore at South Beach.

Lifeboat operations manager John Scott said: “It may have been a lovely sunny afternoon, but if the crew of the yacht had not been close by and lifted the canoeist from the sea, he may have suffered the effects of the cold North Sea.”
