Tributes to ex-leader and mayor

Tributes have been paid to a former mayor and councillor who died last week.

John McCormack, who was a councillor for Ashington Town Council, passed away on Friday, December 13.

For years he was leader of Wansbeck District Council, and then when the new Ashington Town Council was set up he became mayor.

He was a leading figure in the local Labour Party and was also heavily involved in the union at Northumberland College where he was a lecturer.

Ashington Town Council clerk Mike Slaughter said: “Although a number of people knew John was very unwell, the suddenness of his passing will undoubtedly come as a great shock to many.

“I am sure there will rightly be many tributes, individual and collective, over the coming days such was the measure of John’s dedication, involvement and influence at a local and regional level.

“First and foremost, though, John was a long-standing personal friend and close colleague to many people who will be deeply saddened by this news.”
