Three teenagers helped raise hundreds of pounds for a RNLI station after organising a fishing competition.

Andrew Bond, 16, Nathan Riddle, 15, and Will Smailes, 16, came up with the idea over the festive period.

And last week they visited Newbiggin RNLI to hand over the £660 raised.

The competition, along the local coastal shoreline, saw 40 anglers weigh in 56 flat fish, one coalie and one codling.

There was success for Bobbie Thompson Jnr who caught 11 flat fish while Nathan won the junior prize class with six flats.

The highest scoring lady was Katie Henderson who weighed in a bag of three flats while Paul Sample caught the heaviest coalie. Liam Ord won the prize for the heaviest flat fish.

Will said: “We really appreciate all the help and support which made the competition such a success.

“We plan to organise another competition in 2016 to support our local lifeboat.”
