Volunteers are the pride of our communities

Recent large scale events have brought home to me the extraordinary lengths people in our Wansbeck constituency will go to on behalf of our local communities.

The Big Event 4 at Bedlington, Morpeth Fair, Ashington Fair, and a weekend of entertainment at Newbiggin, largely happen because people are prepared to voluntarily give up significant amounts of their own time to make things happen that others can enjoy on their own doorsteps.

Not large armies of people, but generally small numbers of dedicated volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes for no other reason than they have a pride in their own communities and want to do what they give to make their home towns good places to live.

In my work as Wansbeck’s Member of Parliament, I come across this time and time again.

And I consider myself so fortunate to be able to meet and talk to these volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life, doing extraordinary things on behalf of other people.

They epitomise the strength of the community spirit that exists in this area, and that is something we should all be immensely proud of.
