Website hits the 1m mark early

Northumberland Tourism has broken its own record for visitor numbers on its tourist information website – almost two months ahead of schedule.

Last year, for the first time in the company’s history, visitnorthumberland.com received more than one million unique visitors, with the millionth visitor logging onto the site on Christmas Day.

This year, the site hit the one million mark on Sunday.

The county has been in the spotlight again this year, including the airing of programmes such as More Tales from Northumberland with Robson Green and Downton Abbey, which was filmed in Alnwick in the summer.

National events such as the Tour of Britain, which passed through Northumberland over the course of two days in September, saw record numbers of people visiting the website for event information, doubling the expected average daily user.

Jude Leitch, director of Northumberland Tourism, said it was excellent news for the county.

“The value of the tourism sector is important to Northumberland’s economy, so it is a fantastic achievement to see the public responding positively to our site and everyone’s hard work is paying off,” she said. “We will continue to market, support and encourage investment into tourism in Northumberland to ensure this trend continues.”
