GOVERNMENT plans to give patients with mental health problems more rights have been welcomed at a local level.

Health Minister Norman Lamb has revealed that those with mental health problems will be given the same rights to treatment as those with physical health problems, with a maximum waiting period for treatment of 18 weeks.

Coun Ian Lindley, executive member for adult care and well-being at Northumberland County Council, has welcomed the news.

He said: “Here in Northumberland we are determined to nurture our least able and are fortunate to have a well-performing mental health service.

“This new 18 week guaranteed maximum wait will help us to reassure our people with mental health issues.”
