AN elderly woman has been conned out of cash by rogue workmen.
The woman was approached at around noon on Friday by three men offering to carry out repairs to her roof.
She was charged an excessive amount for just one hour’s labour and was even driven to the bank by one of the men so she could withdraw cash.
Several neighbours of hers in Mirlaw Road, Cramlington, had previously refused the men’s offer of work.
It is believed the men were driving around in a black 4x4 pick-up style truck, possibly with a trailer carrying ladders.
Police are appealing for information that could help them track down the rogue callers.
Dc Glenn Calvert said: “These types of unscrupulous workmen tend to target elderly or vulnerable people, and we ask such residents to be on their guard.
“If anyone noticed anything suspicious or may have seen these men, or has been handed a flyer or any other materials which may lead to their identification, we’d like them to contact us as soon as possible.”
Police are advising householders to be extremely cautious about any doorstep callers offering to carry out work and not to invite them inside.
If you have been the victim of a bogus caller or have been contacted by a dubious tradesman, call your local neighbourhood policing team on 03456 043043 ext 69191.
